Last updated March 24, 2026. How we handle information when you use the Noute app and noute.com.

Summary

Noute is a local-first notes app for Mac. Your Markdown files stay on your computer unless you choose to use features that talk to the network. Here is the gist:

  • Notes and workspaces live on your device; we do not receive your note contents from normal editing and browsing.
  • You can turn off anonymous in-app analytics in Settings.
  • noute.com may use PostHog for aggregated analytics (for example which pages are visited).
  • The optional AI agent only sends data when you run it, to the AI provider you configure (for example OpenAI or Anthropic).

Who we are

Noute is developed by Noute Pty Ltd. This policy covers the Noute desktop app, related update checks, and noute.com.

Mac app

The app stores your notes and workspace data on your Mac. We do not upload your note text or files to our servers for ordinary use of the product.

Noute may collect limited, anonymous usage analytics to understand crashes and feature usage. You can disable this in the app’s Settings. Analytics do not include your note content.

The app may contact the internet to check for updates (for example against our release feed), to fetch documentation or assets you request, and when you use features that require a network (such as the AI agent or embedded web content).

Agent chat history and threads are stored locally on your machine unless a feature you use stores or sends them elsewhere.

AI agent and third-party providers

If you use the in-app agent, your prompts and the context you include are sent to the AI provider and model you select, using credentials you add in the app. That processing is governed by that provider’s terms and privacy policy.

API keys you configure for those providers stay on your device and are used only to contact the provider when you run the agent.

Website (noute.com)

We host noute.com on infrastructure that processes standard technical data (such as IP address, user agent, and request metadata) needed to serve pages and protect the service.

Cookies and similar technologies: where configured, we use PostHog for aggregated product analytics on noute.com. PostHog may use cookies or local storage to distinguish sessions; see PostHog’s documentation for details. You can control cookies through your browser settings.

Retention, security, and transfers

Data we process through website analytics or support channels is kept only as long as needed for those purposes or as required by law. App content remains under your control on your device.

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures appropriate to the services we operate. No method of transmission over the internet is perfectly secure.

Our vendors may process data in the United States or other countries where they operate.

Your choices

You can disable in-app analytics in Settings. You can limit cookies and similar technologies through your browser settings for noute.com.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export personal information we hold, or to object to certain processing.

If you are in the European Economic Area, UK, or California, additional rights may apply under GDPR or CCPA/CPRA. Email privacy@noute.com and we will respond within a reasonable time.
